The holiday makes people happy, and that is precisely what some fourth and fifth-grade students from Bell Elementary School in Tyler, Texas, did. These young students turned into “The Bell Girls” who could lift the spirits of the people living at The Hamptons of Tyler Senior Living Center by singing carols and giving gifts, especially socks that looked like cupcakes.
This was a touching experience that occurred on a Monday, and it showed the essence of what the holiday means. As the students sang traditional Christmas carols, their voices warmed the center in a way that drew upon fond memories.
Most of the senior residents are cut off from their families during the holiday and as such, were so grateful toward the students. One of the students recollected, “They’ve been separated from their family living here, they will feel as if they are still at home and will get the opportunity to receive the gifts.” Another said, “We will remind them of their childhood.”
One of the group leaders and students, Ximena Espinoza, said: “Our goal is to make people spread love and feel loved,”
Program coordinator and counselor said: “Being able to see the girls today, just to come and interact and meet new people and just give back to the community in just a small little way, I think all of us want to know that someone is thinking about us or that we are caring about them.”
