This story took place on a hot summer day in August 2024. Edgar Estrada saved a stuck baby in a sweltering car and became a Nebraska hero.
Edgar, a roping contestant, was training for the second round of a tournament at the Merrick County Fairgrounds. Suddenly, he heard a faint cry nearby, so he went to check the source of the voice.
Estrada followed the sound while riding his horse FJ until he reached a parking lot where he found an infant trapped in a locked car.
Using his roping skills, the Nebraska hero lowered the window and opened the door, finding the baby “melting” from the heat, as he said. Edgar then took the baby to a place to cool down and called the local authorities.
Thanks to the help of Nebraska hero, the baby is now safe and sound in a foster home. However, every hero is humble, so Edgar said “I’m not no hero. I just had common sense that day.”
Then Nebraska hero added: “Just listen to your gut and trust your instincts.”
Edgar Estrada was honored as Nebraska’s 2024 Citizen Hero for his heroic deed during the 14th annual Heroes Game between Nebraska and Iowa.
